About Frontinus Gate and Street
The triple-arched northern gate of Roman Hierapolis, flanked by two round towers, opening onto Frontinus Street: the colonnaded main axis that ran straight for about 1,500 metres.
The Frontinus Gate, also called the Domitian Gate, was the monumental northern entrance to the Roman city of Hierapolis. It is a triple-arched gateway in triumphal form, flanked by two round towers, and is dated to about AD 84-86 by a dedicatory inscription to the emperor Domitian on its facade. It takes its usual name, however, from Sextus Julius Frontinus, the proconsul of Asia under whom it was built, around AD 82-83.
The gate opens onto Frontinus Street, the colonnaded main axis of the city, which ran north-south for about 1,500 metres at roughly 13.5 metres wide, bordered on both sides by porticoes and equipped with stone paving and sidewalks. It linked the north gate with a matching south gate. Columns and blocks of the gate and street were re-erected during the Italian excavations begun in 1957. The site lies within the Hierapolis-Pamukkale UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Did you know? The gate carries a dedication to the emperor Domitian, which dates it to about AD 84-86, yet it is usually named after Sextus Julius Frontinus, the proconsul of Asia who oversaw its construction.
