About Ploutonion (Pluto's Gate)

A vent the ancients called Pluto's Gate, still breathing lethal carbon dioxide up from the fault. Animals dropped dead at its mouth while the priests, standing tall, walked away.

The Ploutonion, or Pluto's Gate, is a small sanctuary built over a natural vent that emits carbon dioxide rising along the seismic fault beneath Hierapolis. It was the oldest local sanctuary in the city, dedicated to Pluto, god of the underworld, and earlier linked to the Anatolian mother-goddess Cybele. The vent lies at the foot of the Temple of Apollo, where a roofed chamber of about three square metres capped the opening, fronted by an enclosed sacred court of roughly 2,000 square metres.

Ancient writers including Strabo, Pliny the Elder and Cassius Dio recorded that the fumes killed animals instantly. A 2018 study by Hardy Pfanz and colleagues measured carbon dioxide concentrations up to about 91 percent inside the grotto, confirming the gas. Rediscovered by Italian archaeologists in 1965 and re-explored from 2013, the site had been wrecked by earthquakes by the 6th century AD. It lies within the Hierapolis-Pamukkale UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know? In 2018 Hardy Pfanz and colleagues measured the gas and found carbon dioxide reaching about 91 percent inside the grotto. The vent is fed by the same tectonic fault that heats Pamukkale's springs, not by a volcano.
