About Martyrium of St Philip

A monumental octagonal church on the hill above Hierapolis, raised for the Apostle Philip, martyred here by tradition, with a nearby tomb only tentatively proposed as his actual grave.

The Martyrium of St Philip is a monumental octagonal building on the hill northeast of ancient Hierapolis, raised to commemorate the Apostle Philip. It dates to about the early 5th century AD. Its plan sets a central octagonal hall close to 20 metres in diameter inside a square envelope, ringed by ranges of small rooms interpreted as lodging and service space for pilgrims. The octagon was originally domed, and the building served as a martyrium and pilgrimage focus rather than an ordinary congregational church. It stands outside the city walls among the tombs, reached by a monumental stairway.

By Christian tradition Philip was martyred at Hierapolis in the 1st century AD. Before 2011 the octagon itself was assumed to mark his grave; that year Francesco D'Andria excavated a nearby church containing a 1st-century Roman tomb that he proposed had held Philip's remains, an interpretation not archaeologically confirmed. The martyrium lies within the Hierapolis-Pamukkale UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know? The building is not a long church but an octagon close to twenty metres across, set inside a square and ringed by small rooms that likely housed and served visiting pilgrims.
