About Roman Theatre of Hierapolis
One of Anatolia's best-preserved Roman theatres, cut into the hillside above Hierapolis, with an ornate three-storey stage front and estimated seating for well over ten thousand spectators.
The Roman theatre of Hierapolis is one of the best-preserved theatres in Anatolia, cut into the hillside above the ancient city so that the slope carries its seating. It was built in the 2nd century AD, probably under Emperor Hadrian, on the ruins of an earlier theatre damaged by a devastating earthquake in 60 AD. Its auditorium, or cavea, is estimated to have held some 12,000 to 15,000 spectators, with radial stairways dividing it into wedge-shaped sections across roughly 45 to 50 rows.
Under Septimius Severus, around the turn of the 3rd century, the stage building was rebuilt as a monumental scaenae frons rising over three storeys and carved with mythological figures, including Apollo, Artemis and Dionysus, alongside the Roman imperial family. In late antiquity the orchestra was adapted for animal hunts and spectacles. A major conservation and partial-restoration campaign was carried out roughly between 2004 and 2014, and the theatre lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hierapolis-Pamukkale.
Did you know? No one knows exactly how many the theatre held. Estimates cluster between 12,000 and 15,000 spectators, but no ancient count survives, so even the seating figure remains an educated approximation rather than a fact.
