About Pamukkale Travertine Terraces

A dazzling hillside of white travertine terraces, brimming with warm mineral pools, where soft calcium-carbonate rock is still forming and you walk the slope barefoot to protect it.

The Pamukkale travertines are a terraced hillside of brilliant white rock in Denizli Province, southwestern Turkey, about 20 kilometres from the city of Denizli. The formation is travertine, a sedimentary calcium-carbonate rock deposited by mineral-rich thermal springs: as spring water supersaturated with calcium carbonate reaches the surface, carbon dioxide degasses and calcite is left behind as a white deposit that builds the tiered pools. Fed by numerous hot springs, the whole formation measures roughly 2,700 metres long, 600 metres wide and 160 metres high. The Turkish name means 'cotton castle.'

Pamukkale is protected together with the ancient city of Hierapolis as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hierapolis-Pamukkale, inscribed in 1988. During the 1970s and 1980s, hotels and a road damaged the plateau and reduced its water flow; these were later removed, and the site is now closely managed. Visitors walk barefoot on designated sections, and authorities regulate the flow and rotate closed areas so the calcite can regenerate.

Did you know? Everyone must go barefoot on the terraces. The calcium-carbonate surface is soft and easily scratched or stained, so shoes come off at the edge, a rule that protects the dazzling white far better than any fence.
