About Temple of Apollo

Apollo's chief sanctuary at Hierapolis, deliberately raised over a gas-breathing fault so the city's oracular patron god sat directly above the very doorway to the underworld, the Plutonium below.

The Temple of Apollo was the chief sanctuary of Hierapolis, dedicated to the city's principal god, worshipped here in the oracular Anatolian form of Apollo Lairbenos. A temple was first raised on the site in the late Hellenistic period, but only its foundations survive. The structure visible today was rebuilt in Roman form in the 3rd century AD, reusing stone blocks from the older temple. It stood within a Doric peribolos, a colonnaded enclosure roughly 15 by 20 metres, inside a sacred area about 70 metres long.

The sanctuary was deliberately positioned directly above the Ploutonion, the gas-emitting vent revered as a gateway to Hades, so that temple and vent formed a single sacred complex over the same seismic fault. Excavation and partial re-erection of the columns have been carried out by the Italian Archaeological Mission, active at Hierapolis since 1957. The temple lies within the Hierapolis-Pamukkale UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know? The visible temple is a Roman rebuild, not the original. When it was reconstructed in the third century AD, the builders recycled stone blocks from the earlier Hellenistic shrine whose foundations still lie beneath it.
