About Hierapolis Archaeology Museum

Set inside the restored 2nd-century Roman baths, this museum gathers sarcophagi, theatre sculpture and small finds from Hierapolis, Laodicea and the other lost towns of the Lycus valley.

The Hierapolis Archaeology Museum opened on 1 February 1984 inside the restored Great (South) Baths, a 2nd-century AD complex whose three vaulted halls were restored in the 1970s and adapted as galleries. The exhibition occupies these three indoor halls together with an open-air display on the adjoining ground of the former library and gymnasium.

One hall presents sarcophagi and statues, including examples from Hierapolis and Laodicea and the Sarcophagus of the Muses; a second gathers the sculptural decoration of the Hierapolis theatre, with friezes, reliefs and masks; a third holds small finds such as glass, coins, jewellery, lamps and tools. Beyond Hierapolis, the collection draws on Laodicea, Colossae, Tripolis and other towns of the Lycus valley, and is known for its richly garlanded Roman sarcophagi. The museum stands in the south-central part of the site and forms part of the Hierapolis-Pamukkale UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Did you know? The museum is not a modern building but the restored Great Baths of Hierapolis, a 2nd-century complex. Its three vaulted halls were repaired in the 1970s and opened as galleries on 1 February 1984.
