About Karahayıt (Red Springs)
A quiet thermal-spa village five kilometres north of Pamukkale, famous for iron-rich springs that stain the rock rust-red and orange, a vivid contrast to the white terraces.
Karahayıt is a small thermal-spa village in Denizli Province, about 5 kilometres north of Pamukkale. It is best known for its red and orange iron-rich thermal water, called in Turkish Kırmızı Su, or red water. The colour comes from iron in the springs: as the water reaches the surface and oxidises in the air, it deposits rust-red, orange and purple mineral sediment that stains the travertine, a vivid contrast to the white terraces of Pamukkale. The water is also rich in calcium, magnesium and sulphur, and emerges hot, commonly cited at around 56 degrees Celsius.
The village is fed by the same regional geothermal system that supplies the Pamukkale-Hierapolis springs, but its water is iron-rich rather than calcium-carbonate-dominated. Built around its springs, Karahayıt is lined with thermal hotels and small family pensions serving spa and health tourism. Because it is quieter than Pamukkale itself, it is often visited as a relaxed spa alternative or an add-on to the main travertine site.
Did you know? The village's spring is called Kırmızı Su, 'red water.' Its colour is pure chemistry: iron dissolved in the hot water oxidises the instant it meets the air, coating the rock in rust-red, orange and purple.
