About Struga and the Black Drin

A lakeside town about 15 km west of Ohrid, where the Black Drin river leaves the lake, home of the Struga Poetry Evenings and of the 19th-century poets the Miladinov brothers.

Struga lies on the northern shore of Lake Ohrid, where the Black Drin, the lake's only outlet, flows out and divides the town in two before running 149 km to join the White Drin in Albania. A riverside promenade, bridges and cafés line its banks.

Since 1961 the town has hosted the Struga Poetry Evenings, which became international by 1966, when the Golden Wreath award was created, later won by poets such as Auden, Neruda and Heaney. The Miladinov brothers, 19th-century poets and folk-song collectors born here, have a memorial house.

Did you know? The Black Drin, the only river that flows out of Lake Ohrid, leaves the lake at Struga and runs 149 kilometres, through North Macedonia and Albania, before joining the White Drin.
