About Galičica National Park

A national park on the mountain ridge between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, protected since 1958, with a winding road to viewpoints where you can see both lakes at once.

Galičica National Park, declared in 1958, covers about 227 square kilometres of the limestone range between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, rising to about 2,250 metres at Mount Magaro. A road climbs from the Ohrid shore over the ridge to the Prespa side, with viewpoints over both lakes.

The park is rich in wildlife, with more than 1,700 kinds of plants and many endemic species. It also includes Golem Grad, an island in Lake Prespa with ancient ruins and tortoises. The upper road is often blocked by snow in the cold season.

Did you know? From viewpoints on the Galičica ridge you can see Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa at the same time; Prespa lies about 150 metres higher and drains through the mountain into Ohrid.
