About Church of St Sophia

The great medieval cathedral of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, built in the mid-11th century, turned into a mosque under the Ottomans, and famous for its rare 11th-century Byzantine frescoes on a blue ground.

The Church of St Sophia stands on the foundations of an earlier church in the lower old town. The present building was built or rebuilt under Archbishop Leo (1037-1056) as the cathedral of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, and a two-storey porch with an upper gallery was added at its west end in 1313-14.

Under the Ottomans it became a mosque: the frescoes were covered with lime, the dome was cut down and a minaret was raised. Cleaning began in 1949 and revealed paintings of the 11th to 14th centuries, among the finest of their age. Today the church is also a venue for concerts.

Did you know? The 11th-century frescoes are painted on a deep blue ground rather than the gold usual in Constantinople; they were hidden under lime for centuries while the church was a mosque.
