About Ancient Theatre of Ohrid

A theatre of the Hellenistic period, built around 200 BC in ancient Lychnidos and later used by the Romans, now restored as an open-air stage of the Ohrid Summer Festival.

The Ancient Theatre lies on the hillside below Samuel's Fortress, near the Upper Gate, sheltered by two hills that help its acoustics. It was built around 200 BC, in the late Hellenistic period, and is described as the only theatre of this type in North Macedonia, as the country's other ancient theatres are Roman.

In Roman times it was reportedly also used for gladiator fights. Buried after antiquity, it was excavated from 1977 and in the 1980s and partly reconstructed. Since the late 1980s it has again hosted plays, concerts, opera and ballet, especially during the Ohrid Summer Festival.

Did you know? Built around 200 BC, the theatre is described as the only Hellenistic theatre in North Macedonia, as the country's other ancient theatres, at Scupi, Stobi and Heraclea, are Roman.
