About Church of St Mary Peribleptos (St Clement) and Icon Gallery
A richly painted church of 1295 at the top of the old town, decorated by the painters Michael and Eutychios, who hid their names in the frescoes, with a fine Icon Gallery beside it.
The Church of the Holy Mother of God Peribleptos ('much admired') was founded, according to its inscription, in 1295 by Progonos Sgouros, a Byzantine nobleman related to Emperor Andronikos II, and his wife Eudokia. Its interior is almost entirely covered by frescoes by Michael Astrapas and Eutychios of Thessaloniki.
After the Ottoman conquest it became the archbishops' cathedral and kept the relics of St Clement, so it is also called St Clement's; the relics returned to Plaošnik in 2002. Opposite stands the Icon Gallery, with icons from the 11th to the 19th century.
Did you know? The painters Michael Astrapas and Eutychios hid their names in the frescoes, on the armour and weapons of warrior saints; this church is their first documented work.
