About Bay of Bones (Museum on Water)
A museum on the water south of Ohrid: a modern reconstruction of a Bronze Age village of houses on stilts, built in a bay where divers found thousands of ancient wooden piles.
The Bay of Bones lies beside the Gradište peninsula between the villages of Peštani and Trpejca, about 16 km south of Ohrid. Underwater archaeologists working here from 1997 to 2005 recorded about 6,000 remains of wooden piles on the lake floor, 3 to 5 metres down, from a settlement of roughly 1200 to 700 BC.
In 2007-08 part of the village was reconstructed over the water: a wooden platform with about two dozen thatched houses, reached by a bridge, beside a small museum of finds. The name comes from the many animal bones found by divers. A restored Roman fort stands on the hill above.
