About Monastery of St Naum

A monastery on a headland at the southern end of Lake Ohrid, founded by Saint Naum in 905 by tradition, with his tomb, frescoes, peacocks in the garden and crystal-clear springs.

The Monastery of St Naum stands on a plateau above the lake about 29 km south of Ohrid, near the Albanian border. By tradition it was founded in 905 by Saint Naum, a disciple of Cyril and Methodius, who was buried here in 910. The present church was rebuilt on the old foundations around the 16th century.

Inside are frescoes, carved woodwork of the 17th and 18th centuries and Naum's tomb chapel. Beside the monastery, the St Naum springs, fed partly by water from Lake Prespa, flow into the lake, and rowing boats take visitors through them.

Did you know? Visitors are told that by putting an ear to the saint's tomb you can hear Naum's heart beating; guides say it is really the lake water beating against the rock below.
