About Robev Family House (National Museum)

A grand merchant's house of the early 1860s with whitewashed upper floors overhanging the street, now a museum with carved wooden ceilings and a room of gold from an ancient Ohrid tomb.

The Robev Family House was built for a wealthy merchant family whose trade reached Istanbul, Vienna, Trieste and Leipzig. Their first house of 1827 burned in 1861 and was rebuilt in the early 1860s by the master builder Todor Petkov, as a double house for two brothers, with differently carved interiors.

Since 1950 it has housed the National Museum of Ohrid. Its carved ceilings and furniture show the local woodcarving tradition, and the Golden Room displays a golden burial mask and glove from an Archaic tomb of the 6th-5th century BC found in Ohrid. Other displays may be closed for redesign.

Did you know? The house was built for two brothers, and according to the museum their teams of woodcarvers were not allowed to see each other's work, so each half is carved differently.
