About Plaošnik, Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon

The hillside site where Saint Clement of Ohrid founded his monastery and famous school in the late 9th century, with a church rebuilt in 2002 over his tomb and early Christian mosaics.

Plaošnik, on the slope between Samuel's Fortress and Kaneo, is where Saint Clement of Ohrid, a disciple of Cyril and Methodius, taught from 886 and, by tradition, built a monastery dedicated to St Panteleimon in 893. He was buried here in 916. Under the Ottomans his church became a mosque, which was taken down in 2000.

The present Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon, consecrated in 2002, is a reconstruction on the original foundations, and Clement's relics were returned to it. Around it lie excavated early Christian basilicas, including a richly decorated 5th-century baptistery with mosaics of birds and geometric patterns.

Did you know? According to his medieval biography, Saint Clement taught some 3,500 disciples here between 886 and 893, which is why his school is often called the first Slavic university.
