About Samuel's Fortress
The walls and towers of Ohrid's hilltop fortress, linked with Tsar Samuel, who made Ohrid the centre of his medieval state in the 990s, with sweeping views over the old town and the lake.
Samuel's Fortress crowns the highest hill of Ohrid's old town, about 100 metres above the lake. Archaeologists suggest the site was first fortified in the 4th century BC. In the 990s it became the stronghold of Tsar Samuel, whose medieval state had its capital and its church centre in Ohrid until the Byzantine conquest of 1018.
The walls, 10 to 16 metres high, were repaired many times by Byzantines and Ottomans, and a major restoration in 2003 added new battlements where none had survived. The Upper Gate, between two round towers, has Greek and Roman inscribed stones built into its walls.
Did you know? Archaeologists suggest that the hill was first fortified in the 4th century BC; in the 990s it became the stronghold of Tsar Samuel, who made Ohrid the centre of his state.
