About Utah Beach

The westernmost D-Day beach, on the Cotentin coast near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, where the U.S. 4th Infantry Division landed on 6 June 1944; a landing museum stands at La Madeleine.

Utah was the westernmost of the five D-Day beaches, on the eastern shore of the Cotentin Peninsula near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont in Manche. On 6 June 1944 the assault was led by the U.S. 4th Infantry Division of VII Corps. Strong tidal currents carried the first waves roughly a mile south of the intended sector, onto a more lightly defended stretch of coast, and resistance proved comparatively light. Casualties were far lower than at Omaha; the seaborne troops linked up inland with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions dropped behind the beach.

The Utah Beach Landing Museum stands at La Madeleine, on the site of a German strongpoint marking the point where the 4th Division came ashore. Its collection includes a B-26 Marauder bomber, one of only a few surviving examples. Preserved bunkers and monuments to American units and the U.S. Navy line the dunes behind the beach.
