About Sainte-Mère-Église
A Cotentin market town behind Utah Beach, widely described as among the first liberated on 6 June 1944, where a paratrooper effigy still hangs from the church steeple.
Sainte-Mère-Église is a market town on the Cotentin Peninsula in Manche, set astride the main road inland from Utah Beach. In the early hours of 6 June 1944 it lay within the 82nd and 101st Airborne drop zones, and it is widely described as one of the first French towns liberated that day. Holding the town helped secure the causeways and routes leading inland from the invasion coast.
The town centres on its church square, the Place du 6 Juin. From the steeple hangs a permanent effigy of a paratrooper and parachute, recalling Private John Steele, whose descent was caught there during the night drop. Inside, stained-glass windows honour the airborne divisions. The Airborne Museum on the square displays a C-47 transport and a Waco glider. It also marks kilometre zero of the Voie de la Liberté, the Liberty Road whose milestones trace the Allied advance across France.
Did you know? A permanent effigy of a paratrooper and parachute hangs from the church steeple, recalling Private John Steele, whose descent was caught there; the episode was popularised worldwide by the 1962 film 'The Longest Day'.
