About Omaha Beach

The largest of the five D-Day beaches and the costliest for American forces on 6 June 1944; today an open beach marked by memorials and the 'Les Braves' sculpture.

Omaha was the code name for the largest of the five D-Day landing beaches, running about eight kilometres along the Calvados coast within the communes of Vierville-sur-Mer, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer and Colleville-sur-Mer. The assault on 6 June 1944 was carried out mainly by the U.S. 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions, with Army Rangers. Steep bluffs, strong defences and the unexpected presence of the German 352nd Infantry Division made it the bloodiest of the beaches. Casualty totals are estimated rather than precisely known; one figure often cited is about 2,400, within a broader range.

The beach was deliberately left intact so its sand could serve the landings, and today it is an open public beach used for commemoration. On the sand at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer stands 'Les Braves', a stainless-steel sculpture by Anilore Banon unveiled in 2004. Preserved German resistance nests survive above the shore, and monuments to the 1st and 29th Divisions mark the sectors.
