About Juno Beach Centre
Canada's Second World War museum, at Courseulles-sur-Mer behind Juno Beach, where the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division landed on 6 June 1944. Its building is shaped like a stylised maple leaf.
The Juno Beach Centre is Canada's Second World War museum in Normandy, standing at Courseulles-sur-Mer immediately behind the beach code-named Juno. Juno was the Canadian landing sector, assaulted on 6 June 1944 by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, and the centre commemorates the roughly 14,000 Canadians who landed there that day, a figure best treated as an estimate. Its exhibitions reach beyond D-Day to cover Canada before the war, the country's civilian and military war effort, and Canadian society since 1945.
Designed by the Canadian architect Brian K. Chamberlain, the single-storey building is shaped like a stylised maple leaf, and the site includes memorials and a preserved German bunker. It grew from the efforts of veteran Garth Webb and grassroots fundraising, and was inaugurated on 6 June 2003. The centre offers guided beach visits and opens for most of the year.
Did you know? Juno was the Canadian landing sector on D-Day, assaulted on 6 June 1944 by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. The centre commemorates the roughly 14,000 Canadians it says came ashore here that day.
