About Mémorial de Caen

A major museum of the Second World War, D-Day, the Battle of Normandy and the Cold War, built above a former German command bunker and presented as a museum for peace.

The Mémorial de Caen is a museum and war memorial in the northern part of Caen, dedicated to the history of the twentieth century and centred on the Second World War and the fragility of peace. Its exhibitions cover the war, the D-Day landings, the Battle of Normandy and the Cold War, and it describes itself as 'un musée pour la paix', a museum for peace. Designed by the architect Jacques Millet and built on the grounds of a former German command bunker, it was officially opened on 6 June 1988, the forty-fourth anniversary of D-Day, by President François Mitterrand.

A Nobel Peace Prize gallery was added in 1991, and a Cold War extension opened in 2002, including neutralised warheads, aircraft and a fragment of the Berlin Wall. Memorial gardens honour the American, British and Canadian forces. It is one of Normandy's largest museums, drawing roughly 400,000 visitors in 2007.
