About Arromanches and the Mulberry Harbour
The Gold Beach town where 'Mulberry B', a prefabricated harbour towed from Britain in 1944, supplied the invasion; concrete caisson remains still stand offshore, best seen at low tide.
Arromanches-les-Bains, in the British Gold Beach sector, was the site of 'Mulberry B', one of two prefabricated artificial harbours built to supply the invasion; the other, Mulberry A, lay off Omaha Beach. Nicknamed 'Port Winston' after Winston Churchill, it was assembled from components built in Britain and towed across the Channel, and began operating within days of 6 June 1944. Its breakwaters and quays used large hollow concrete caissons code-named 'Phoenix', with floating roadways and pier-heads. After a severe storm wrecked Mulberry A in late June, the Arromanches harbour carried the main role.
The planners deliberately left Arromanches out of the direct assault so the town would survive for the harbour. Concrete caisson remains are still visible in the bay and on the beach at low tide. On the seafront, the D-Day Landing Museum reopened in a new building in April 2023, and the clifftop Arromanches 360 cinema shows archive footage of the Battle of Normandy.
