About Bayeux Cathedral
A Norman-Romanesque and Gothic cathedral consecrated in 1077, the original home of the Bayeux Tapestry. Spared wartime bombing, it still crowns the heart of the medieval old town.
Bayeux Cathedral, or the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux, is the seat of the Bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux and one of Normandy's great churches. The present building was consecrated on 14 July 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror, in a ceremony led by his half-brother Bishop Odo of Bayeux. It combines Norman-Romanesque work in its eleventh-century crypt, lower nave and towers with later Gothic additions rising above, its central crossing tower completed only in the nineteenth century.
The cathedral was the original home of the Bayeux Tapestry, which was kept and displayed here in earlier centuries before moving to a museum nearby. Protected as a monument historique since 1862, it survives intact because Bayeux was largely spared the bombing of 1944, and it remains the focal point of the town's medieval centre and an active place of worship.
