About Bayeux Old Town

Liberated on 7 June 1944, the first sizeable French town freed, and left almost undamaged. Half-timbered houses, the river Aure and a watermill fill its medieval centre.

Bayeux was the first town of the Battle of Normandy to be liberated, entered by British troops on 7 June 1944, the day after D-Day, against only light resistance. Because German forces were concentrated on defending Caen, its buildings came through the battle virtually untouched, and the town keeps an intact medieval and later historic centre focused on its cathedral. General Charles de Gaulle made his first speech on liberated French soil here on 14 June 1944, when Bayeux, with about 15,000 people, was the largest French town yet freed.

The old quarter is best explored on foot along the signed Circuit du Vieux Bayeux. Rue Saint-Jean is lined with historic and half-timbered houses, the river Aure turns a surviving watermill in the centre, and prosperity after about 1450 left the town with some sixty stone mansions. De Gaulle returned in 1946 for the separate, constitutional 'Discours de Bayeux'.
