About Bayeux Tapestry

A roughly 70-metre wool embroidery of the 1066 Norman Conquest. As of September 2026 the Bayeux museum is closed for renovation and the cloth is on loan in London until 2027.

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most famous objects to survive from the medieval world: an embroidered cloth, not a true woven tapestry, worked in coloured wool on linen. Roughly 68 to 70 metres long, it narrates the events leading to the Norman Conquest of England and the Battle of Hastings in 1066, across some fifty-eight scenes captioned in medieval Latin. Most scholars believe it was made in England, probably near Canterbury, in the 1070s; tradition links its commission to Bishop Odo of Bayeux, though this is unproven.

Long associated with Bayeux Cathedral and normally shown in the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, it has been on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register since 2007. Visitors should note a temporary change: as of September 2026 the museum is closed for renovation until autumn 2027, and the tapestry is on loan to the British Museum in London until 11 July 2027.

Did you know? Despite its name, the Bayeux Tapestry is not woven but embroidered: coloured wool stitched onto a linen ground, worked on nine panels that were later sewn together into one continuous strip.
