About Lucerne Town Hall

A Renaissance town hall with an Italian palazzo body and a broad Swiss farmhouse roof, its clock tower older than the building it now adorns.

Lucerne's Town Hall stands on the Kornmarkt beside the river Reuss, built between 1602 and 1606 by the master builder Anton Isenmann, with craftsmen from northern Italy, on the site of the city's former grain hall. Its distinctive character comes from a deliberate contrast: an Italianate Late Renaissance facade, often likened to a Milanese palazzo, is topped by a large hipped roof in the manner of a traditional Swiss farmhouse. The attached clock tower is older still, medieval in origin, and was incorporated into the newer complex.

At street level, the arcaded ground-floor hall known as the Kornschütte served as the town's grain store and trading hall, and now hosts exhibitions and concerts. Guidebooks frequently rank the building among the finest Renaissance town halls in Switzerland. Together with the neighbouring bridges and quays, it forms one of the most recognisable riverside views in the old town.

Did you know? The town hall wears two styles at once: an Italian Renaissance body modelled on northern-Italian palazzi, crowned by a vast hipped roof in the manner of a traditional Swiss farmhouse.
