About KKL Luzern (Culture and Congress Centre)
Jean Nouvel's Culture and Congress Centre, famous for its huge cantilevered roof and an acoustically acclaimed concert hall, where the lake itself is drawn inland through three quiet canals.
The KKL Luzern, the Culture and Congress Centre, stands on the Europaplatz where the lake meets the railway station, and it is unmistakable for one reason: its roof. Designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel and built between 1995 and 2000, the building is crowned by a vast, wafer-thin cantilevered roof that projects some forty-five metres out over the square toward the water. Nouvel had wanted to build over the lake itself; forbidden, he instead channelled the lake inland through three canals that thread the complex.
Beneath the roof lies far more than a concert hall. The centrepiece is a concert hall celebrated for its acoustics, engineered by the American Russell Johnson with adjustable echo chambers and a movable canopy. The complex also holds the Kunstmuseum Luzern and a flexible multipurpose hall, making it at once a home for the Lucerne Festival, an art museum and a congress venue.
Did you know? Jean Nouvel originally wanted the building to stand out over the lake. When that was refused, he reversed the idea and drew the water inland instead, cutting three canals that run straight through the complex.
