About Jesuit Church
Lucerne's riverside Baroque landmark, dedicated to Francis Xavier and generally called Switzerland's first large Baroque church. Behind a modest facade waits a luminous white-and-gold interior beneath twin onion domes.
The Jesuit Church, dedicated to the missionary Francis Xavier, is generally regarded as the first large church built in the Baroque style in Switzerland. Construction began in 1666 and the church was consecrated in 1677. Built by the Jesuit order to serve both its adjoining school and the wider city, its floor plan follows the Church of the Gesù in Rome: a single broad nave without aisles, drawing every visitor's attention toward the high altar. Behind a fairly restrained facade waits a luminous white, pink and gold interior.
The interior was later reworked in the Rococo style during the mid-eighteenth century, adding delicate stucco and pastel flourishes. The twin onion-domed tower caps that define the church on the Lucerne skyline are not original: they were completed only in 1893. Prized for its fine acoustics, the church is regularly used today as a concert venue.
