About Hofkirche St. Leodegar
Lucerne's landmark church above the lake. Its twin medieval towers survived the 1633 fire; the rest is a Late-Renaissance rebuild, home to a celebrated organ with a mechanical rain machine.
The Hofkirche St. Leodegar, the collegiate church “in the Court”, is the most prominent church in Lucerne, its twin towers rising above a terrace overlooking the lake. A religious community has occupied the site since around the year 735. When fire destroyed the medieval church in 1633, only the two towers survived, combining older Romanesque masonry below with Gothic upper storeys and spires.
The rest of the church was rebuilt between 1633 and 1639 in a Late-Renaissance style, an unusual undertaking during the Thirty Years' War and now regarded as an important example of that architecture north of the Alps. Inside stands a celebrated organ, first built in the 1640s and repeatedly enlarged since, with roughly seven thousand pipes and a famous mechanical “rain machine” used in evening recitals. Despite popular claims, it is not the largest organ in the world.
Did you know? Fire gutted the medieval church in 1633, and only the two towers survived. That is why they look older than the Late-Renaissance nave rebuilt between them in the years that followed.
