About Musegg Wall
A long stretch of Lucerne's medieval wall along the ridge, nine towers still standing, one with a clock that insists on striking before all the rest.
The Musegg Wall is a well-preserved stretch of Lucerne's medieval fortification, running along the ridge above the old town. Around 870 metres survive, together with nine towers, forming the northern arc of a defensive ring built mainly in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Despite its age it is medieval rather than Roman. Several of the towers open to visitors in the warmer months, rewarding the climb with sweeping views over the roofs, the river, the lake and the surrounding peaks.
Among the towers, the Zytturm, or time tower, holds the oldest clock in the city, made in 1535, and by long tradition is allowed to strike the hour about a minute before all the other clocks in Lucerne. The Luegisland, the tallest of the Musegg towers, once served as a lookout post. Together the wall and its towers count among the longest and best-preserved medieval fortifications in Switzerland.
Did you know? The Time Tower holds Lucerne's oldest clock, made in the fifteen-hundreds. By tradition it strikes the hour roughly a minute before every other clock in town, a small privilege it has kept for centuries.
