Lake Lucerne, Vierwaldstättersee, the 'Lake of the Four Forested Cantons', is one of the most dramatic lakes in the Alps: an irregular, fjord-like sheet of water covering roughly 114 square kilometres, forking between steep wooded mountains such as Pilatus and Rigi. Its four namesake cantons, Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Lucerne, gather around its shores and arms. The lake lies at about 434 metres above sea level.
The lake sits at the heart of Switzerland's founding story. On the Rütli meadow, above the Lake of Uri, tradition places the legendary oath that bound the first cantons together, and the same shore inspired the William Tell legend later immortalised on stage. Today restored Belle-Époque paddle steamers still cross the water, linking lakeside villages and mountain railways in one of Central Switzerland's great journeys. The fleet is often described as the largest of its kind on any inland lake.
