About St Luke's Church (the Bombed-Out Church)

A former Anglican church at the top of Bold Street, gutted in the May 1941 Blitz and kept as a roofless ruin, now a memorial garden and community arts space.

St Luke's is a former Anglican parish church at the corner of Berry Street and Leece Street, at the top of Bold Street in central Liverpool. It was designed in a Gothic Revival, Perpendicular style by John Foster senior and his son John Foster junior, successive surveyors to the Corporation of Liverpool. The foundation stone was laid in 1811 and the church was completed around 1831. On 6 May 1941, during Liverpool's May Blitz, an incendiary bomb gutted it by fire, leaving only the roofless shell.

The building was left as a ruin and is now preserved as a memorial and public open space, its surviving tower and outer walls enclosing a garden in the city centre. Grade II* listed since 1952, it is widely known as the bombed-out church. Since around 2007 it has served as a community and arts venue, and since 2014 has been run by the Bombed Out Church organisation.

Did you know? Locally it is simply the bombed-out church. On 6 May 1941, during Liverpool's May Blitz, an incendiary bomb gutted St Luke's by fire, and the roofless shell has been kept ever since.
