About St George's Hall

A grand neoclassical hall of 1854 facing Lime Street station, once home to concerts and law courts, with a tunnel-vaulted Great Hall and a hidden Minton tile floor.

St George's Hall is a grand neoclassical building on Lime Street, directly opposite Liverpool Lime Street station. Designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, who won the competition around 1839, it was completed after his death in 1847 by Charles Robert Cockerell and opened in 1854. The hall combined concert halls with the city's assize law courts, and Crown Court sittings continued until 1984. A major restoration was completed when it reopened in 2007. It is a Grade I listed building.

The Great Hall runs about 169 feet by 77 feet beneath a tunnel-vaulted ceiling, and its Minton encaustic tile floor of roughly thirty thousand tiles is usually kept covered and revealed only occasionally. The building also holds a large Willis organ from the 1850s and the ornate circular Small Concert Room. It is flanked by St George's Plateau and its lions and by St John's Gardens.

Did you know? St George's Hall was built to house both concert halls and the city's assize law courts, so justice and music ran side by side; Crown Court sittings continued until 1984.
