About Liverpool Cathedral
Giles Gilbert Scott's vast Anglican cathedral on St James's Mount, built across most of the twentieth century in local sandstone, with a soaring tower and a celebrated ringing peal.
Liverpool Cathedral is the Anglican cathedral of the city, the seat of the Bishop of Liverpool and the mother church of the diocese. It rises in local sandstone on St James's Mount at the southern end of Hope Street, designed in a Gothic Revival style by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who won the commission in 1903 as a young architect. King Edward VII laid the foundation stone in 1904; the Lady Chapel was consecrated in 1910 and the main cathedral in 1924, with work continuing until a completion service in 1978.
The central tower rises to about 101 metres and carries a ringing peal the cathedral describes as the highest and heaviest in the world. It is widely called the largest cathedral in Britain, though such rankings depend on the measure used. Inside are a vast Henry Willis organ and works by Edward Carter Preston, Elisabeth Frink and Tracey Emin.
Did you know? Giles Gilbert Scott won the commission in 1903 as a young architect with little built behind him. He kept refining the design for the rest of his life as construction slowly advanced.
