About Royal Albert Dock

A restored 1846 dock complex on the Mersey, its five Grade I listed warehouse blocks ringed by cast-iron columns and now home to museums, galleries, bars and hotels.

The Royal Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses on the Liverpool waterfront. Designed by dock engineer Jesse Hartley with Philip Hardwick, it officially opened in 1846 and was built from cast iron, brick and stone with no structural timber, a system often described as Britain's first non-combustible warehouse design. Its five multi-storey warehouse blocks, fronted by a cast-iron colonnade, are Grade I listed. After falling into disuse and dereliction, the complex was restored and reopened in 1988 by the Prince of Wales, and it gained a 'Royal' prefix in 2018.

It now houses the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Tate Liverpool and The Beatles Story, alongside restaurants, bars, shops and two hotels. The International Slavery Museum occupies the third floor of the Maritime Museum. The dock formed part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2004 and delisted in 2021, and Liverpool's earlier port wealth was built substantially on the transatlantic slave trade.

Did you know? The dock's five warehouse blocks are Grade I listed, and Wikipedia describes them as the biggest such group of Grade I listed buildings anywhere in the United Kingdom, an attributed superlative worth noting.
