About The Cavern Club
A live-music cellar on Mathew Street where the Beatles often played. The original was demolished after 1973; today's club is a 1984 reconstruction on an adjacent site.
The Cavern Club is a music venue on Mathew Street in Liverpool. It opened on 16 January 1957, originally as a jazz club. The Beatles made their debut there on 9 February 1961, after returning from Hamburg, and between 1961 and 1963 they performed at the club around 292 times, with their final show on 3 August 1963. The venue also hosted acts including the Rolling Stones, The Who, Queen, Black Sabbath and Elton John.
The original club closed on 28 May 1973, after British Rail made a compulsory purchase of the warehouses for railway works, and it was subsequently demolished. A rebuilt Cavern reopened on 26 April 1984 within a later development on a site adjacent to the original, set at roughly a ninety-degree angle and covering about 70% of its footprint, and partly using some of the original bricks. A bronze statue of John Lennon stands on Mathew Street opposite the club.
