The Museum of Liverpool is a national museum that tells the story of Liverpool, its people and the city's global significance. Operated by National Museums Liverpool, it opened to the public in 2011, with the first phase of galleries opening on 19 July 2011 and the remainder later that year. The purpose-built building, designed by the Danish firm 3XN, cost approximately 72 million pounds and stands at the Pier Head on Mann Island on the waterfront, replacing the former Museum of Liverpool Life.
Its opening galleries included 'Wondrous Place', 'The People's Republic' and 'Global City'. The second phase was formally opened in December 2011 during a visit by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. Admission is free, in common with National Museums Liverpool venues. Some sources give a June 2011 opening date, but the 19 July 2011 phase-one opening is the best-supported.
