About Pier Head and the Three Graces
Liverpool's riverside civic front, where the Royal Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool buildings, the Three Graces, face the Mersey, topped by the city's copper Liver Birds.
Pier Head is a riverside area on the Liverpool waterfront on the River Mersey, dominated by a trio of early-twentieth-century buildings known as the Three Graces. They are the Royal Liver Building, constructed between 1908 and 1911, the Cunard Building of 1914 to 1916, and the Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907. The Royal Liver Building carries two clock towers, each crowned by a Liver Bird, the mythical emblem of the city. The copper statues were designed by Carl Bernard Bartels and have stood there since 1911.
The three buildings symbolise Liverpool's status as a major mercantile and shipping port in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a prosperity built substantially on the eighteenth-century transatlantic slave trade. Pier Head formed part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2004 and revoked in 2021. The Museum of Liverpool and the Mersey Ferries terminal also stand on the same waterfront.
