About Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates
One of ancient Cyprus's great religious sanctuaries, west of Kourion, where the restored columns of the Temple of Apollo, god of the woodland, stand against the sea after nearly three thousand years of worship.
The Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, a little west of Kourion, was one of the most important religious centres of ancient Cyprus, dedicated to Apollo as Hylates, god of the woodland and protector of Kourion. It was a place of worship for well over a thousand years, from about the eighth century BC to the fourth century AD.
At its heart stood the Temple of Apollo, and the partly restored columns and pediment fragment of its Roman-era rebuilding are the site's most photographed sight, standing at the end of a paved sacred way. Around them spread the remains of pilgrim halls, a palaestra for athletes, a bath complex with underfloor heating, and an ancient altar precinct, all set on a hillside with a view over the sea.
