About Ancient Kourion
A spectacular Greco-Roman city on a cliff above the sea west of Limassol, with a restored theatre overlooking the bay, the mosaic floors of the House of Eustolios, an agora and early Christian basilicas.
Ancient Kourion (Curium), on a limestone cliff above Episkopi Bay about twenty kilometres west of Limassol, is one of the finest archaeological sites in Cyprus. An ancient Greek city-kingdom, said by tradition to have been founded by settlers from Argos, it flourished in Greek and Roman times until a series of earthquakes around AD 365 to 370 badly damaged it.
Its glory is the Greco-Roman theatre, perched on the cliff edge with a sweeping view over the sea; enlarged under the emperor Trajan, it seated some 3,500. Nearby, the House of Eustolios preserves beautiful Roman mosaic floors of birds, fish and figures, and a bath complex. The site also holds a colonnaded agora, a monumental fountain, and the ruins of early Christian basilicas.
