About Municipal Garden
The city's leafy central garden, laid out in British times, home to the Limassol Zoo, an open-air theatre and the long-running Cyprus Wine Festival with its giant 'vrakas' wine-grower emblem.
The Limassol Public Gardens, near the seafront, were laid out under British rule in the late nineteenth century and are among the city's oldest green spaces, shaded by eucalyptus, pine and cypress. Within them are the Limassol Zoo, home to some three hundred animals, an open-air theatre that runs a summer programme, and the Pattichion Municipal Museum beside the garden.
The garden is best known as the home of the Cyprus Wine Festival, held here each autumn since 1961, when Cypriot producers poured free wine to celebrate the island's wine country. Its emblem is a giant statue of a traditional wine-grower, the 'vrakas', near the entrance. Grape-treading, folk dancing, zivania and Commandaria make the festival a joyful celebration of Cypriot wine.
