About The Grand Mosque

The Ottoman-era Great Mosque in the old Turkish quarter beside the castle, still serving Limassol's Muslims, raised over the remains of a Byzantine church whose apse can still be seen.

The Grand Mosque of Limassol, the Kebir (Great) Mosque, stands in the old Turkish quarter a short walk from the castle, and is still an important place of worship for the city's Muslims. Dating from the Ottoman centuries, after the Ottomans took Limassol in 1570, it was built over earlier Christian remains: excavation beneath it revealed the apses of a Byzantine church and a late-13th-century bishop's burial.

A small Muslim cemetery beside the mosque holds the graves of notable Ottomans, with tombstone verses in Ottoman and Persian script, and an ablution fountain stands in the courtyard. Nearby on Loutros Street is the Eski Hamam, a 16th-century Ottoman bathhouse. The mosque, declared a historic monument, can be visited outside prayer times with modest dress.
