About Omodos

A picture-perfect wine village high in the Troodos Mountains above Limassol, built around a cobbled square and the Monastery of the Holy Cross, famous for its old wine presses, lace and Commandaria country.

Omodos is one of the loveliest and most-visited traditional villages of Cyprus, set about 800 metres up in the Troodos Mountains roughly 40 kilometres from Limassol, in the heart of the island's wine country. Its centre is a cobbled pedestrian square, lined with cafes and craft shops, before the Monastery of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros), said to hold a relic of the Holy Cross.

The monastery, richly renovated in the early nineteenth century with a gilded iconostasis, houses small museums and, by tradition, predates the arrival of St Helena in Cyprus. Around the village are old wooden wine presses, clay wine jars, and wineries working local grape varieties; Omodos is a classic stop on the Cyprus wine routes, famed for its wine, its zivania spirit, its fine lace and its arkatena bread.
