About The Burren
A vast, silver-grey moonscape of cracked limestone in County Clare where Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean wildflowers grow side by side, scattered with ancient tombs including the great Poulnabrone dolmen.
The Burren, in Irish Boireann, 'the rocky place', is an extraordinary karst landscape in County Clare, south of Galway: hundreds of square kilometres of bare grey limestone pavement, cracked into flat slabs and deep fissures, where water vanishes underground into caves. A Cromwellian officer wrote that it had 'neither water enough to drown a man, nor a tree to hang him, nor soil enough to bury him', yet he admitted its cattle grew fat on the sweet grass between the rocks.
In the thin soil of its crevices grows a botanical marvel: Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean wildflowers, lime-lovers and lime-haters, flourishing side by side, including most of Ireland's wild orchids. Among the grey stone stand hundreds of prehistoric tombs, above all the Poulnabrone dolmen, a portal tomb used for burials between about 3800 and 3200 BC. The whole region is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark.
