About Lynch's Castle
The finest medieval merchant townhouse in Ireland, a carved stone tower on Shop Street built by the Lynch family, with gargoyles and the royal arms of Henry VII, now in daily use as a bank.
Lynch's Castle, on the corner of Shop Street, is the grandest surviving medieval townhouse in Ireland, a fortified stone mansion built by the Lynch family, the most powerful of the fourteen Tribes of Galway. A plaque calls it 'the finest 16th-century urban tower house in Ireland'; its facade is carved with gargoyle waterspouts, heraldic roundels, the arms of the Lynches and of the FitzGerald Earls of Kildare, and the royal arms of King Henry VII.
Below the royal arms a curious little carving shows an ape holding a child, tied to a FitzGerald family legend of a pet monkey that saved an infant from a fire. Once a five-storey house, it was altered in Georgian times to the four storeys seen today. Remarkably, it has never become a museum: it has housed a bank for over a century, and a branch of Allied Irish Banks still trades inside it, among the medieval stones.
Did you know? Lynch's Castle, built by the Lynch family of the Tribes of Galway around 1500, is called the finest 16th-century urban tower house in Ireland, carved with gargoyles and the royal arms of Henry VII.
