About The Latin Quarter

The Latin Quarter is the modern nickname for the medieval core of Galway, the pedestrian run of Shop Street and Quay Street that falls from near Eyre Square down toward the river and the Spanish Arch. These cobbled lanes were the main streets of the walled town the Tribes of Galway built on their trade with Spain and France, and they remain the social heart of the city, lined with brightly painted shopfronts, craft shops and seafood restaurants.
Above all it is a place of pubs and music: traditional sessions and street performers fill the air, from Tigh Neachtáin, a pub since 1894 in the old home of the animal-welfare pioneer Richard Martin, to venues made famous in song, for Galway is the city of the two 'Galway Girl' hits. Claddagh jewellers sell the city's own ring of heart, crown and clasped hands, made in Galway since at least 1700.
