About Cliffs of Moher
Ireland's most famous sea cliffs, a wall of rock rising over 200 metres from the Atlantic on the Clare coast south of Galway, crowned by O'Brien's Tower, alive with seabirds and part of a UNESCO Geopark.
The Cliffs of Moher, in Irish Aillte an Mhothair, are the most visited natural wonder in Ireland, a wall of sea cliffs running about fourteen kilometres along the Atlantic coast of County Clare, roughly seventy kilometres south of Galway. They rise to a maximum of 214 metres just north of O'Brien's Tower, a round stone viewing tower built in 1835 by the local landlord Cornelius O'Brien for the tourists who already came to marvel at the cliffs.
The rock is layered shale and sandstone laid down over 300 million years ago, and the great sea stack of Branaunmore stands offshore where the waves have cut it free. In season tens of thousands of seabirds nest here, including Atlantic puffins. A grass-roofed visitor centre opened in 2007, and since 2011 the cliffs have been part of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark and a signature point of the Wild Atlantic Way.
