About Kylemore Abbey
A romantic neo-Gothic castle mirrored in a Connemara lake, built in the 1860s as a grieving husband's memorial, now a Benedictine abbey with a miniature Gothic church and a restored Victorian walled garden.
Kylemore Abbey, in the heart of Connemara, is one of the most photographed sights in Ireland: a sprawling neo-Gothic castle of pale stone reflected in the still waters of a lake below a wooded mountain. It was built in the late 1860s as a private home for Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor-turned-businessman and MP, and his wife Margaret. When Margaret died young, in 1874, the heartbroken Henry built a jewel-like Gothic church nearby in her memory, a 'cathedral in miniature'.
Since 1920 it has been home to a community of Benedictine nuns, who had fled their abbey at Ypres when it was destroyed in the First World War; they ran a girls' boarding school here for almost a century. The estate includes the Gothic church, a mausoleum in the woods, and a famous six-acre Victorian walled garden, laid out in the 1870s and lovingly restored by the nuns.
